How to identify a slipper chair.
My slipper chair
Home for me is a collection of my favorite things. My vintage slipper chair is one of these items. I found it many years ago at an estate sale and instantly fell in love. With its small stature, curious blend of sleek modern legs and low curving back I instantly knew it would be a great addition to my home.
I didn’t hate the existing slightly worn muted orange golden tones with white floral print, but I had aspirations of something a little more elegant. How hard could recovering a small chair be?
Off to the fabric store I went. Heading straight for the fabric section, I oohed and aahed over all the possibilities. Next I ventured to the home furnishing books to get an idea of what covering a chair actually entailed. As I flipped through page after page of ‘how to’ instructions with all the tacking and shaping etc I came to the realization that this may not be such an easy endeavor for me to undertake. Yikes!
Even as is, I still love my little slipper chair. It has followed me from one place to another over the years. The slightly worn muted tones have grown on me over time. I actually think they work reasonably well with the warm tones of my home, especially the dark floors. It is not a large piece and tends to slip into small spaces easily. This little slipper chair has created a cozy nook for me in a variety of rooms, and is easily picked up and relocated as needed. It now has a permanent place in my home as well as my heart.
How to identify a slipper chair
A slipper chair is easily identified by its short legs and armless design. It dates back to the 18th century where it was used in a ladies boudoir. Made popular again, it was brought into the modern era in the 1970’s. Today it is used in many interior designs and in a variety of rooms throughout the home. They pair really well with coffee tables, and can fit nicely in tight or smaller spaces. For an in-depth description and some great examples of a slipper chair, visit Chairish.com
