Why I love my white serving dishes
Versatility, style, and flawless presentation. These are just a few reasons why I love my white serving dishes.
I like to keep things to a minimum so as not to overwhelm my space. However, I have a creative side, so over the years I have added various go-to serving pieces that I could not live without. These are pieces that can be used together no matter the occasion.
White serving dishes are great if you are just starting out, looking for ideas, or revising your current selection, these make great go-to pieces. If you have limited storage for you dishes, consider white.
Why I like white
Lets talk about white for a moment. If you find yourself entertaining guests, white is invaluable. It is neutral and goes with anything from casual BBQ to elegant dining. The best thing about white, is it can be combined with any color to reflect season, occasion, personality, and food.
It may not look exciting on its own.. but it does not distract from the food. Food looks great on white, and white allows a colored napkin, placemat or centerpiece on your table-scape to shine. Now white does not have to be used on its own, and in this day and age, almost anything goes. White combines easily with other colors, styles and patterns allowing you to mix an match.
Why I like square dinner plates.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with round dinner plates. I own these too. I just find the square pieces to be slightly more versatile. When space is a consideration, pieces that can do double duty are invaluable. I use my square dinner plates as serving platters whilst entertaining all the time. Round dinner plates tend to look like round dinner plates. The square could easily be either. In saying this both round and square or rectangle work perfectly well together on a buffet table. So really its just personal preference.
So now I get two uses out of my dinner set.. dinner plates AND serving plates. I especially like to use these for appetizers and serving trays for condiments that may be served in smaller dishes.
White serving platters
I own a handful of medium rectangle serving platters, a couple of large platters and one narrow uniquely shaped platter. I have yet to come across a small to medium sized gathering that between my dinner set and platters, I could not cater for. .
The medium sized rectangular serving platters work great for finger food such as appetizers. They are also great for serving roast vegetables and miniature desserts. My larger platter is great for sliced or BBQ meats and roasts, or great for a larger appetizer such as a vegetable platter or olives, cheese, crackers and grapes etc. I love my uniquely shaped narrow one for holding condiment dishes, or things like dessert truffles and chocolates. The unique shape adds a little interest and movement into the mix.
Extras
Added to these are 3-4 scooped oval deeper dishes, that are wonderful for serving food such as rice and beans, chips, and warmed bread rolls covered with a nice cloth. These also work well for serving individual generous sized helpings of salad.
Finally I have a variety of x-small and small white dishes along with the breakfast bowls from my dinner set. These are fantastic for serving condiments and are the perfect size for single potions of dried fruit and nuts or trail mix for a snack. These smaller bowls even work well staged on a larger platter of vegetables to hold dips such as guacamole and hummus. This is a great place to add in color if you desire to compliment other areas of your décor.
Using my white dinner set and my white serving dishes, I seamlessly maneuver from Thanks giving, to Christmas, New Year and Valentines day. Look for my blogs on Seasonal Entertaining for ideas. Coming soon.
For something different I will serve lunch such as a sandwich, with sliced fruit and nuts along side on a medium sized rectangle serving platter. I feel it changes things up and breaks the monotony of the every day.
More reasons to love white
White dishes grouped together display well on open shelves, or in glass front cabinets with little creativity needed. You only have to google this on Pinterest for inspiration.
White lends itself to many different looks. Anything from Minimalist, Farmhouse, Shabby chic to more formal and everything in between. If you have a handful of colored or themed dishes these usually combine well for an integrated and pulled together look.
Last but not least it is easy to add extra dishes if you need to cater to a larger crowd, or accidently break a dish. White dishes are easy to find and available for any budget. I have been using my white dishes for years now, and particularly like these white Threshold serving pieces.
I wanted to add an extra one to my collection recently and they still carried a similar one to what I already have. They are nice and simple, and have lasted really well. Whether you prefer round or square, you can not go wrong with white. What is your favorite way to use white?
I love my basic white dishes! I have yet to use the floral china I inherited from my Grandmother since the white dishes look just as dressy on a nice tablecloth for a special occasion as they do when I am using them to reheat takeout meals. I think food looks more appealing on white dishes compared to darker color finishes.
Hi Maureen,
Its hard to go wrong with white! The best thing about white is that it mixes and matches with just about anything. I think everyday is a good excuse to use the pretty things we have also (obviously where appropriate). I would love to see your creativity combining them with your grandmothers dishes too! I love that you also use table cloths. This is another whole area of fun!
I’ve never really given any thought to most of the things you shared, but I certainly will now! I love the idea of using square plates as either plates or serving dishes. It really makes sense. Thanks for this informative post.
Thanks Tina,
Its amazing how versatile white plates can be. Im glad you enjoyed my post and found it informative!
I love white dishes too. I have been using all white dishes for years. As you stated they are super versatile. However, I do love color and have recently added colored dishes to my collection. But, I will never give up my white dishes. Loved this post. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Sabrina,
I totally agree. Its definitely fun to add color and mix and match. Glad you enjoyed my post!
100% agree with you! I have white dishes and they really do showcase food better than any other color. We definitely eat with our eyes first and I try to make all of my food look as good as it tastes, even weeknight meals!
Hi Ashley,
Thanks for your comment. Yes food is such a sensory experience and you are right about its visual effect. Presentation is half the fun. You really cant go wrong with white. I love that you make the effort for the every day!
White dishes are my favorite too! I agree that they are totally versatile and easy to find. Nice to hear I am not the only one.
